Southern Remains Unbeaten After Rolling Past UAPB

Southern 84, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 50

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Derick Beltran scored 22 points and Malcolm Miller added 21 as Southern University handled Arkansas-Pine Bluff 84-50 Saturday night in a matchup of the last two teams that were unbeaten in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Yondarius Johnson added 11 points for the Jaguars (11-6, 5-0) and Javan Mitchell turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Brandon Moore added 10 points and Christopher Hyder nine assists for Southern, which came in leading the conference in both scoring (66.5 points per game) and defense (57.7 points per game).

Miller, the league leader in 3-point percentage (47.7 percent) made 5 of 9 against the Golden Lions (4-12, 3-1).

Moore scored three baskets in a 13-2 opening run for the Jaguars, who never trailed and led 33-20 at halftime.

Terrell Kennedy scored 18 points and Davon Haynes had 11 to pace Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Alabama A&M 64, Alabama State 57

NORMAL, Ala. (AP) -- Demarquelle Tabb scored 17 points Saturday night to lead Alabama A&M to a 64-57 victory over Alabama State in Southwestern Athletic Conference action.

Tabb, whose points included 9 of 13 at the free-throw line, helped give the Bulldogs (7-9, 3-2) a 33-30 lead at the half. Alabama A&M outscored the Hornets (4-14, 3-2) in the second half with help from Jeremy Crutcher and Brandon Ellis.

Crutcher scored 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Ellis augmented his 14 points with 8 rebounds, 3 steals and a blocked shot.

Phillip Crawford led the way for Alabama State with 16 points. He was 8 for 13 from the floor while also grabbing 5 boards.

Jamel Waters was the only other Hornet in double figures. Half of his 12 points came on his 6-for-6 shooting at the line. But the Bulldogs went 20 of 29 at the stripe to Alabama State's 9 of 11.

Prairie View 60, Grambling State 44

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (AP) -- Carl Blair scored 18 points and Josh Eleby added 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Prairie View A&M to a 60-44 victory against Grambling State on Saturday night.

The Panthers (6-11, 1/3 Southwestern Athletic), who ended a six-game losing streak, never trailed after Eleby's jumper gave them an 8-7 lead 4:46 into the game.

Bryant Purvis had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers (0-14, 0-5), who have lost 24 of their last 25 games dating to last season.

Prairie View A&M led 44-36 when it went on an 11-1 run over the next 3:10 to take permanent control. Blair had nine points during the surge, which ended with his layup that gave the Panthers a 55-37 cushion with 4:06 remaining.

Alcorn State 72, Mississippi Valley State 67

LORMAN, Miss. (AP) -- Marquiz Baker scored 27 points and Alcorn State held on to beat Mississippi Valley State 72-67 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game.

LeAntwan Luckett added 19 points and five assist for Alcorn State (6-14, 4-1).

MVSU (1-13, 1-3) shot just 34.6 percent (9 for 26) in the first half and Baker scored 21 points in the period as Alcorn State led at halftime 36-24.

The Braves led by as many as 17 points in the second half but the Delta Devils fought back to get within four, 69-65, with 1:19 left to play.

After two free throws by Baker made it 71-65 with 59 seconds remaining, MVSU went just 1 for 4 on field goals the rest of the way to seal Alcorn's victory.

The Braves shot 50 percent (14 for 28) in the period.

Darryl Marshall scored 21 points for the Delta Devils.

Texas Southern 84, Jackson State 57

HOUSTON, Texas (JSU) -– Despite a team high 18 points from Dundrecous Nelson, the Jackson State men’s basketball team fell 84-57 to Texas Southern at H&PE Arena Saturday night in SWAC action.

With the loss JSU falls to a 1-13, 0-5 record and TSU improves to 4-13, 3-1.

Kelsey Howard scored 16 points and pulled down a team high six rebounds to go along with two assists. Christian Williams scored 14 points and pulled down four rebounds in 36 minutes of action.

Five Texas Southern Tigers scored in double figures. Aaron Clayborn led TSU with 18 points and Ray Penn and Omar Strong each added 16 points.

JSU shot 34% from the field, 30% from three-point range and 58% from the free throw line. The Tigers also dished out 10 assists. Texas Southern shot 53% from the field, 42% in threes and 85% from the line. TSU dished out 20 assists.

JSU trailed 38-25 at halftime.
