LORMIN, Miss. - Southern University notched its first win of the season with a 3-0 sweep over Alcorn State on Monday at the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium.
SU (1-12) posted set scores of 25-14, 25-11, 25-19.
Simone Beasley led the Jaguars' offense with a game-high 12 kills hitting .455 for the match. Keya Bennett registered 18 assists and Michelle Williams posted seven digs to lead all payers. SU hit .294 for the match after setting the tone in the first set hitting .583.
After controlling the the first two games, SU held a 10-5 advantage in the third before Alcorn answered with a 5-3 spurt to close the gap 13-10. An 11-5 run in favor of the Jaguars ensued to keep SU in front 21-18. However, multiple errors by Alcorn down the stretch secured the 25-19 win in the last frame for SU.
The Lady Braves (1-14) were led by Shaquanda Hollis' eight digs hitting .412. Georgia Parsons posted nine asissts with Jaclyn Kuzniar and Jade Hooper tacking on three digs apiece.

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Despite a season-high 11 blocks, Prairie View A&M dropped a highly contested 3-1 non-conference match to McNeese State on Monday inside Memorial Gymnasium.
Breanna McNeil led PVAM with 11 kills to complement six digs. Bruna Menezes added 10 kills and Kelsey Espinosa dished 35 assists with eight digs to lead the Lady Panthers.
PVAM (4-14) picked up the first set 25-18 before surrendering three games to McNeese (4-12), 25-15, 25-23, 25-20.
Tied at 14 in the first set, the Lady Panthers were fueled by back-to-back kills from Charae Caldwell and Bruna Menezes to take a 16-14 lead. A few possessions later Caldwell came away with another kill with an assist from Espinosa to cap off a 5-1. The run helped PVAM take a 20-15 lead followed by a 5-3 advantage to close out the set for the win.
For McNeese State, Kelly Graham posted a game-high 45 assists to help the Cowgirls snap a two-match losing streak. Three players finished in double figures in kills for McNeese. Amber Fryer contributed 14 kills and Megan Carlton registered 13. Courtni Bauer added 10 kills and Whitney Ellisor led all players with 12 digs.
