Tough Day on the Pitch Wraps up Opening Weekend

As the opening weekend of the 2012 SWAC soccer season came to a close, four teams came up empty and went down to defeat.

Stephen F. Austin 8, Jackson State 0

In Jackson, the Lady Tigers fell in their home opener to Stephen F. Austin. Playing without
preseason All-SWAC selection Kimberlie Hernandez and veteran Ebru Yamala, were not able to defend their home turf against an aggressive SFA squad.

JSU goalie Taylor Emerson recorded a game high 10 saves, falling one save shy of tying her collegiate high of 11 saves. SFA goalie Morgan Glick finished with two saves against Jackson State. SFA recorded 29 shots, with 19 shots on goal and nine assists. JSU had two shot attempts in the game.

SFA scored six of its eight goals in the first period en route to the victory.

Kennesaw State 9, Alabama A&M 0

In Kennesaw, Ga.,  once again the Lady Bulldogs could not muster enough shots to score their first goal of the year. For the first time this season true freshman Marissa Oehler led the team in saves with six in 45 minutes of action in goal.

Ana Huertas, Diana Amafoa and Edna Mensah each recorded a shot for Alabama A&M. Starting goalie Linda Aboagye posted four saves on 10 shots.

Troy 5, Alcorn State 0

ALCORN STATE, Miss. - Troy University outshot Alcorn State 31-5, handing the Braves their second straight loss. ASU keeper Ashley Murray had 15 saves.

Arkansas State 6, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0

Jonesboro, Ark. - Arkansas-Pine Bluff managed only three shots in their shutout loss to Arkansas State. The Lady Lions were outshot 28-3 in the game. UAPB keeper Kristie Martinez finished the game with 10 saves.
