Baseball Tourney Begins Wednesday in Baton Rouge
The 2012 SWAC Baseball Tournament begins Wednesday on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. The first of four games on day one is set for 9:00 a.m. at Lee-Hines Field when Alcorn State faces Grambling.
The Braves are the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Division, while GSU enters the field as the No. 3 seed from the Western Division. The game pits the 2010 (GSU) and 2011 (Alcorn) SWAC champions against one another.
The second game is scheduled to begin at noon with Alabama State against Prairie View A&M. Alabama State tied Alcorn for second in the East, but is the No. 3 seed in the division. Prairie View, which led the Western Division for much of the season before falling from the top spot in the final week of the season, is the No. 2 seed from the West.
The 3:00 p.m. game features the top seed from the West, Southern, against the No. 4 seed from the East, Mississippi Valley State. The Jaguars have won 15 straight games and will be trying to claim their first title since 2009. The Delta Devils claimed the final berth from the Eastern Division.
The final game of day one is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and pits Jackson State vs. Texas Southern. JSU posted a league-best 21-3 conference record during the regular season. TSU edged out UAPB for the final tournament berth from the Western Division.
Tickets are available at the gate - $10 per day or $35 for a tournament pass. Students are $5 per day.
The tournament runs Wednesday through Sunday with the championship game set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
