With most of the league's 10 teams at or nearing the halfway point in their conference schedule, the top eight are seperating themselves, jockeying for position in the upcoming tournament field.
In the East, Alabama State is the early leader at 2-0, with Jackson State and Alabama A&M close behind at 1-0. Mississippi Valley State has played the most SWAC matches, losing twice to Alabama State, but sweeping Alcorn State to even their conference record at 2-2. At this point, the Alcorn State is on the outside looking in, looking for their first win in the conference, saddled with an 0-4 record.
In the West, Prairie View is leading the way with a 3-0 mark. Grambling State is hot on the Lady Panther's trail at 3-1, with Southern University not far behind at 2-1. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern are a game apart, battling for the No. 4 spot in the West. UAPB is currently sitting at fourth with a record of 1-3, while Texas Southern is 0-4.
Alabama A&M and Jackson State square off Friday night in Huntsville. JSU is rolling, winning their last 11 matches, while A&M has taken two of the last three. During their winning streak, the Lady Tigers have only lost two sets. JSU will also visit Alabama State on Saturday night in Montgomery so there could be a serious shakeup at the top of the East Division.
In other matches, Texas Southern will try and scratch the win column at home against Grambling on Friday night. Alcorn State was scheduled to play against Prairie View, but the match has been reset for Nov. 11.
