Texas Southern wins SWAC Western Division title
HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas Southern women’s volleyball team gained the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference, Western Division, season championship Thursday night at H&PE Arena. The Tigers swept Grambling State, 3-0.
With this win, Texas Southern has a league record of 7-0 with only one conference match left in the season. This marks the Tigers’ second consecutive western division title. In 2013, Texas Southern challenged Arkansas-Pine Bluff and ended with a victorious sweep, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22. The previous year (2012), the Tigers took second place in the west.
TSU only allowed 12 scores during last night’s, first set win – seven due to Texas Southern errors. The second set was much like the first as the Tigers took the set, earning its longest scoring run of seven points. Grambling State produced a larger fight in the third set, but proved not enough as TSU registered the last two points – both on opponent errors. Kali Fluke led the match with 14 kills, while Kailynn Gray sprung for a high 15 digs. Diemend Richardson and Sarah Wooton shared the match lead with 11 assists apiece.
The Tigers earned their highest hitting percentage during the first set at .344, holding Grambling State at .000. The lead never changed throughout the hour and two minutes of play, and the score only tied on three separate occasions.
The Tigers will finish their regular season play against Southern, November 14th at home, before heading to the SWAC Volleyball Tournament. The match is set for 7 p.m.
