CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES

• Against Alcorn State last Thursday, Quarterback Brandon Duncan (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) finished with 505 yards passing and  four touchdowns, breaking his own career high of 457 yards against Grambling State on October 18, 2015.  He has now surpassed former UAPB QB Ben Anderson, who passed for 467 yards against Grambling State in 2014, setting the new school record for most passing yards in a game 

• Willie Quinn is now ranked first in the FCS heading into week 4 of action in All-Purpose yards.  The return specialist and receiver is averaging 225 yards per game. Last weekend against Alabama State, he hauled in four receptions for 178 yards and three receiving TDs. He also threw a 30-yard passing TD and returned his 10th punt for a TD on a 78-yard return. 

• Michael Haywood is the first head coach at Texas Southern to shutout an oppoent since 2001.  TSU defeated Mississippi Valley State 31-0 last Saturday 

• With the exception of 2013, The Alcorn State/Grambling State game has been decicded by one poession.
2015: GRAM 35-34, 2014: GRAM 28-21,
2013: ALCN 48-0, 2012: ALCN 22-21
 

• Recaord Watch: Southern running back Lenard Tillery now has 3,491 career rushing yards. He now only needs 559 yards to become the SWAC’s all-time leader. Tillery is only one of 14 rushers from the league to gain over 3,000 career rushing yards since 1970 

• Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s 45-43 win over Alcorn State was only the third team victory in the last 14 attempts 

• Last Saturday against Tulane, Southern gave up an 86-yard kick return for a touchdown.  Its first since the 2014 Bayou Classic against Grambling State 

• Alabama State’s 64-6 loss last week at Southern was the worst in 54 years. Clark-Atlanta defeated the Hornets 61-0 in 1962. It also marked Brian Jenkins’ worst loss since a 2013 54-6 decision against eventual National Champion Florida State. Jenkins was coach at Bethune-Cookman that season
