CONFERENCE NEWS & NOTES

• Prior to this Saturday’s game with Mississippi Valley State, Montana had only faced one school from the SWAC previously.  In 1989, the Grizzlies defeated Jackson State

• Texas Southern has won three consecutive conference games for the first time since 2000.

• After giving up 54 points to Prairie View A&M and surrendering nearly 430 yards per game on defense in 2015, Grambling State held PVAMU to 16 points and the Panthers only managed 289 yards of total offense last Saturday

• Despite last Saturday’s loss, Alcorn State racked up 313 yards of total offense including 155 yards rushing against No. 16 Arkansas

• Record Watch: Southern running back Lenard Tillery now has 3,678 career rushing yards. He now only needs 372 yards to become the SWAC’s all-time leader. Tillery is only one of 14 rushers from the league to gain over 3,000 career rushing yards since 1970

• Jackson State has given up fewer than 100 rushing yards in its last three games. Grambling State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State

• Alabama State held Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a season low 23 yards rushing last Saturday while also sacking Brandon Duncan a season high six times.

• Brothers Hurts: Texas Southern starting quarterback Averion Hurts is the older brother of Jalen Hurts, starting QB at the University of Alabama. The two have combined for 19 TD’s through four weeks.  This week, TSU is facing a school from Alabama as they’ll host Alabama A&M

• With 1, 933 career yards rushing, Alabama State Khalid Thomas is only 30 yards shy of passing former Hornet and current Cleveland Browns running back Isaiah Crowell

• The SWAC has its first team ranked in the FCS Top 25 this season. Grambling State checks in at No. 25 heading into Week 6

• Darien Anderson of Alcorn State currently has six sacks on the season which has him ranked second overall among 75 FCS players
