WSOC Tourney: #2 Prairie View defeats Southern 2-0
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Prairie View A&M Lady Panther's wrapped up the quarterfinals of the 2014 Women's Soccer Tournament by defeating Southern University 2-0 Thursday night at the John Hunt Soccer Complex.
All-SWAC first teamer, Celene Batrez scored early in the match when she blasted a goal in the 9th minute past goalkeeper Sarah Forde, giving Prairie View A&M the first 1-0 lead of the match. Batrez recorded her fourth goal of the season.
Later in the match, an indirect, free kick was awarded to the Lady Panthers. All-SWAC second teamer, Reina Mata took the free shot in the 27th minute but it was saved by Forde. Southern's Jackey Almendarez took her first shot of the night but it went too wide, allowing PVAMU to receive the ball and take it down the field. Towards the end of the first half, the Lady Jaguars looked to score their first goal of the night. #7 Fabiola Parra strongly fired the ball straight on but it was successfully stopped by goalie Bianca Garza. Shots were limited for the remainder of the first half.
There was solid defense shown throughout the game by each team. Southern ended the half with four shots and Prairie View A&M finished with two.
Starting the second half off, All-SWAC first teamer, Alicia Cooper took the ball straight down the field and fired a shoot that was quickly stopped by Southern's goalie Sarah Forde. #12 Ashley Virgil took a shot in the 26th minute, resulting in the third save for Forde.
At the 65:00 minute mark #22 Breanna Powell for Prairie View aimed a shot right at the net but slightly missed it. Prairie View came back with two quick shots from Clarisa Maldonado and Virgil. Both shots were recovered. Shortly afterwards, Batrez made another appearance when she exploded the ball through goalie, Sarah Forde, giving the Lady Panthers a 2-0 lead. She was assisted by Nahuacalli Romo-Lara. Batrez recorded her fifth goal of the year.
The last five minutes became extremely intense. The two teams battled with the ball back and forth. Southern wasn't allowed another shot until the last few minutes of the match but wasn't able to make a connection.
The Lady Panthers outshot Southern University only by two, 9-7, but with a 6-2 shots on goal advantage. Sarah Forde finished the match with four saves for the Lady Jaguars. Prairie View's goalkeeper, Bianca Garza recorded two on the night.
Prairie View A&M will hit the field again tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. facing the Lady Hornets of Alabama State University.
