WSOC Tourney: Howard Blanks Alabama A&M, 6-0
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Number one seeded Howard University opened the 2014 Women's Soccer Tournament with an impressive 6-0 victory over the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M at the John Hunt Soccer Complex in Huntsville, Ala.
Howard's Rasheeda Ansari took the first shot of the game in the very first minute. It was saved by Alabama A&M's goalie Marissa Oehler. Ansari saw alot of touches in the first five minutes of the match.
At the 13:16 minute mark, Junior forward Ansari fired another shot and scored the first goal of the match, giving Howard a 1-0 lead. The Lady Bison limited the Lady Bulldogs to only three shots the first half. Howard had a total of 13 shots the first half.
Dytria Ruddy scored the second goal for the Lady Bison, assisted by All-SWAC first teamer, Nikanya Clark in the 15th. Six minutes later, Senior midfielder, Nia Walcott found the back of the net, recording Howard's third goal, assisted by Clark. This goal would mark Walcott's ninth on the season.
The Lady Bison went into the second half, leading 3-0. A penalty kick was awarded to Howard in the 57th minute. Carmen Suarez took the shot and fired the ball right past A&M's goalie to give the Lady Bison a 4-0 lead early in the second half.
A corner kick from Alabama A&M's Ana Huertas allowed sophomore, Jordan Stubblefield a nice shot, but flew too high and landed on top of the net. In the 65th minute, A&M's Estelle Esperance took the ball down the field and launched an open shot that was saved by Goalkeeper of the Year, Kyra Dickinson.
A completed free kick was taken by Walcott that shockingly, flew straight through the wall of five A&M defenders, pushing the score to 5-0. Howard's Walcott would shine again in the 73rd minute, scoring her third goal of the match, advancing Howard to a 6-0 lead.
The last ten minutes of the game got really intense as the referee had to stop the game numerous of times to talk to the players. Alabama A&M fought hard and found many shots but were unable to capitalize on any. The Lady Bison outshot the Lady Bulldogs 23-7, with a 15-4 shots on goal advantage. Goalkeeper Marissa Oehler finished the match with a total of nine saves. Howard's goalie, Kyra Dickinson tallied four.
Howard will go head to head with the Lady Tigers of Jackson State at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7.
