Alabama State 74, Troy 68

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Phillip Crawford led four players in double-figures with 12 points and Alabama State handed Troy its fifth straight loss, beating the Trojans 74-68 Thursday night in a nonconference matchup.

Shawntez Patterson and Stephawn Brown also had 12 while Denzell McDaniel had 10 off the bench. McDaniel posted a game-high six assists for Alabama State, which won its first game of the season.

Alabama State (1-7) held a 42-36 advantage at halftime and quickly pushed its lead to 16, 52-36, after opening the second half with 10 straight points. The Hornets led by 20, 64-44, behind a 3-pointer from Patterson at the 11:27 mark.

Alabama State shot 52 percent (28 of 54), including 10 of 17 from deep, and dished out 19 team assists, compared to just nine for Troy.

Tevin Calhoun had 13 for Troy, which outscored Alabama State 24-10 over the final 11 minutes to create the final margin.

Southern U. 68, Louisiana-Monroe 39

MONROE, La. (AP) -- Derick Beltran scored 26 points as Southern University trampled Louisiana-Monroe for a 68-39, nonconference victory Thursday night.

Beltran scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the first half, helping the Jaguars (4-5) take a 32-21 lead into intermission. Southern held the Warhawks (1-5) to just 26.9 percent (7 of 26) shooting in the frame, collecting eight steals, including three by Beltran.

The second half wasn't much better for Louisiana-Monroe, when the Warhawks shot just 22.7 percent (5 of 22).

Malcolm Miller had 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Southern.

Louisiana-Monroe's Jayon James recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Warhawks' coach Keith Richard was charged with a double technical with 9 minutes remaining and Southern hit all four free throws to take a 51-34 lead. The foul shots sparked a 21-5 Jaguar run.

Louisiana-Monroe was held scoreless over the final 8 minutes.


Washington State 52, Jackson State 41

Pullman, Wash. (AP) -- Brock Motum scored 27 points, DaVonte Lacy added 11 points including three 3-pointers and Washington State beat Jackson State 52-41 on Thursday night.

Washington State (7-4) trailed 36-34 with 12 minutes remaining before the Cougars woke up and went on a 14-0 run. The Tigers would not score again until the 5:15 mark and managed to score only four more points the rest of the way.

Dundrecous Nelson scored 13 points, Christian Williams and Kelsey Howard each added eight points for Jackson State. The Tigers shot just 22 percent from the field, 13 of 57, compared to Washington State, which shot 40 percent for the game, making 20 of 49 shots.

Jackson State (0-7) scored 21 points off 19 Cougar turnovers, keeping the Tigers competitive throughout most of the game, but it had no answer for the inside play of Motum, leading Washington State by outscoring the Tigers 30-14 in the paint.
