GRAMBLING, La. - Grambling State University notched its first home win of the season defeating rival Southern University, 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 15-11), on Wednesday inside Memorial Gymnasium.

GSU (2-19, 1-7) survived a scare holding off SU (3-23, 1-7) to capture its first Southwestern Athletic Conference western division match. After picking up the first two sets, the Lady Tigers dropped the next two frames before claiming the final game for the victory.

Three players finished in double figures in kills for GSU. Dorothy Brown led the way with a double-double recording team-highs, 13 kills and 20 digs. April Johnson and Tiara McIver finished with 11 kills apiece.

Breonna Loud added 18 assists and Kayla Lewis followed with 13. On the back line, Chantel McGill finished with 15 digs and Kierra Hogan gathered 10.

With the deciding set tied at 3, a McIver kill sparked a 7-1 run to give GSU a 10-4 advantage. The Lady Jaguars responded behind back-to-back kills from Jacquia Bell and Jaquel Watts, followed by a GSU attack error, to close the gap, 10-7. Watts led SU with 14 kills and Bell added 7.

Both teams exchanged points before SU scored from a pair of GSU attack errors to shrink the lead, 11-10. Again, both teams registered a point from kills with GSU holding the slight advantage, 12-11.

However, Johnson's kill forced a SU timeout and the Lady Jaguars committed an attack error to give GSU a 14-11 cushion. On the following play, the Lady Tigers closed the match and game with a service ace from Marisol Macias for a 15-11 score.

Simone Beasley posted a double-double for SU with 10 kills and 15 digs. Amber Shelby had 10 kills and Chanda Journet dished out 22 assists. Keya Bennett contributed 17 assists and Michelle Williams led the Lady Jaguars defense with 22 digs. SU totaled 13 blocks for the match.
