Grambling 4, Southern 1
Sierra Ardnt scored four goals to lead Grambling past Southern in the SWAC opener for both teams. It was the first win of the season for GSU who improved to 1-4 and 1-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Southern fell to 0-5 and 0-1.
Ardnt was very efficient, hitting 40 percent of her shots. Of her 10 shots, six were on-goal. As a team, GSU had 12 shots, eight on-goal.
Nahomie Lagardere had four saves and allowed only one goal for GSU.
Fabiola Parra scored the only goal for Southern. Her score tied the game at 1-1 in the 15th minute. However, Ardnt poured in goals in the 33rd, 56th and 65th minute to blow the game open.
Mississippi Valley State 2, Alcorn State 0
Nykosi Simmons and Josee Primeau found the back of the net and Shelby Willcocks earned a shutout as Mississippi Valley (1-8, 1-0 SwAC) blanked Alcorn State (0-8, 0-1).
Simmons scored with an assist by Bianca Vigliante in the 5th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Primeau added insurance in the 59th minute for the Devilettes.
The MVSU defense was stifling allowing only one shot on goal. Willcocks stopped that shot earning her only save of the game.
Jackson State 1, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0
Victoria Casher scored the only goal of the game in the 21st minute and goalkeeper Taylor Emerson made it stand as Jackson State (1-7) edged Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Emerson had four saves in the JSU win.
Prairie View 4, Houston-Victoria 1
Prairie View improved to a league-best 3-7 with a win over Houston-Victoria. Yosselyn Aguilar, Kara Ballard and Breanna Powell netted first half goals to give PVAM a 3-0 lead at intermission. After Houston-Victoria scored in the 74th minute to cut the lead to 3-1, Aguilar scored her second goal of the night to put the game out of reach.
Ariana Roundtree had a pair of assists for PVAM. Navyd Diaz and Jackee Murilo also had assists for the Lady Panthers. Goalkeeper Bianca Garza finished with eight saves.
Houston Baptist 6, Texas Southern 0
Houston Baptist scored early and often en route to a win over Texas Southern (1-10). HBU led 5-0 at intermission, then added one more goal in the second half. Liliana Hernandez and Rebecca Hajny split time in goal for the Lady Tigers. Hernandez surrendered the first five goals, while Hajny played the enitre second half and allowed the final goal.
